National Immigration Settlement Strategy - Dialogue with key stakeholders
Thursday, July 29, 2004
Dialogue sessions on the National Immigration Settlement Strategy will take place in Auckland (9 August), Hamilton (2 August), Wellington (13 August) and Christchurch (30 July). Local government, non-government organisations and ethnic communities are all invited to take part in these workshops.
There are a number of barriers to achieving good settlement outcomes, including a lack of national coordination and information-sharing among those working in the settlement area. The government is keen to find out how people involved in settlement consider the way government agencies consult and work with them can be improved.
Therefore, Ministers have asked the Department of Labour, and other central government agencies, to talk to people who are involved in settlement about:
- how we can improve the way government and communities talk to each other about settlement issues, and
- the priorities for improving settlement outcomes so the government can develop a long-term work plan.
Officials from a number of key government agencies will attend the workshops to hear the views of stakeholders and provide further information about the National Immigration Settlement Strategy. These views will be reported back to the Minister of Immigration and other Ministers.
The workshops are scheduled as follows:
Christchurch - Friday, 30 July 2004
Hamilton - Monday, 2 August 2004
Auckland - Monday, 9 August 2004
Wellington - Friday, 13 August 2004
